Stabilized Manitoba Maple Block (Box Elder)
Stabilized Manitoba Maple Block (Box Elder)
For Knifemakers from a Knifemaker, eh! 🍁
Locally harvested Box Elder aka, Manitoba Maple burl. Submerged in Cactus Juice for 24 hours under vacuum draw. Soaked for another 48 hours to allow deep penetration of the resin. Official Cactus Juice Stabilizing dyes.
Block sizes are included in the photos.
If you are cutting the block for knife scales, I recommend adding a liner to the inside of the scale to provide extra strength to the material.
It is common for there may be voids in the wood. I recommend filling voids with medium or wood CEC Corp CA Glue.
A burl is formed inside the trunk of a tree when a stem or bud begins to grow irregularly by invading the surface of the trunk. This often results in twisted and misaligned grain that has grown rapidly. The knarled growth can capture pockets of bark.
Get a block and beautify your knife!
RDF has been stabilizing woods for its own use since 2018 and is now making it available to other knife makers.
